What to Do if Your SASSA Shows “Other Source of Income Identified”

It is a very frustrating situation if your SASSA often declines SRD (R350) grant applications under the reason “other source of income identified”. WHAT DO  YOU DO?

What Does “Other Source of Income” Mean?

SASSA works with banks to check if applicants have money coming into their accounts. If the system picks up deposits of R624 or more per month, it assumes that you have another income and disqualifies you from the grant.

NOTE: Even small deposits like money from family, eWallet, cash send, or NSFAS allowances can be flagged as “income.”

Being declined for “other source of income” doesn’t always mean you have a job. It usually means the system has flagged transactions in your bank account.

What To Do If You’re Declined

The best way forward is to appeal each month, monitor your account activity, and update your details with SASSA.

Appeal Every Month

If you’re declined, you must appeal for each specific month.

The Independent Tribunal, not SASSA, will review your case.

Check Your Bank Account

Look through your monthly statements. Are there deposits above R624? If yes, that explains the decline. Even small, irregular transfers may confuse the system.

  • If possible, ask family/friends to send support money to another account not linked to you.

Update Your Payment Method

If support money is being sent to your account, consider changing your SRD payment method. On the SASSA SRD website, update your details to:

Provide Proof You’re Unemployed

It helps to keep:

  • An affidavit stating you’re unemployed.
  • A termination letter from your last job.
  • Bank statements showing no stable monthly income.

Take these to your local SASSA office if you keep getting declined.
