NYSC vs. Master’s: Which Should You Do First?

As a final year student, you must be asking yourself this question: Should I go for my National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) or pursue a Master’s degree first?

Why NYSC is Important

The NYSC programme is mandatory for Nigerian graduates under 30. It not only serves as a requirement for employment in government and some private sectors.

It helps graduates, as;

  • Gain work experience.
  • Build a professional network.
  • Increase employability in Nigeria.
  • Access certain scholarships, government opportunities, and even Master’s admissions.
  • Without NYSC, some career doors may remain closed.

Why Consider a Master’s First

On the other hand, starting a Master’s programme immediately after graduation has its benefits:

  • Keeps your academic momentum going.
  • Allows you to specialise in your chosen field.
  • Increases your global opportunities, especially if you want to study abroad.
  • Helps you stand out in competitive industries.

If you have the financial capacity and admission already secured (particularly abroad), you may consider doing your Master’s first.

But What Is the Best Choice?

The best choice depends on your circumstances:

Do NYSC First if:

  • You want to work in Nigeria.
  • You don’t want to be disqualified from certain jobs or scholarship opportunities.
  • You need to gain work experience before pursuing further studies.

Do Master’s First if:

  • You have a fully funded scholarship abroad that requires immediate enrolment.
  • You plan to settle outside Nigeria, and NYSC won’t be relevant to your career.
  • You want to build advanced academic knowledge before joining the workforce.

What Do We Have to Say?

If your long-term plan is to work and grow in Nigeria, NYSC should come first. But if you have an international scholarship and you won’t be settling in Nigeria, a Master’s may be the better option. Always weigh your opportunities, finances, and career path before deciding.
