Every month I am being declined, saying other source of income, I am unemployed from end of 2019
That’s a very frustrating situation. SASSA often declines SRD (R350) grant applications under the reason “other source of income identified” when their system detects any money coming into your bank account, even if it’s small or temporary. This doesn’t always mean you actually have a steady income.
Understand why it happens
SASSA checks bank accounts with banks through means testing. If they pick up deposits above R624 per month (the official income threshold), they assume you have another source of income.
Even small transfers (family, friends, once-off payments, NSFAS, eWallets, etc.) can trigger the decline.
Submit an appeal
You must appeal each month you are declined.
— Go to the SRD Appeals website
— Log in with your ID and phone number, then select the month(s) declined and submit an appeal.
Appeals are handled by the Independent Tribunal, not SASSA directly.
Check your bank account activity
Look at all deposits from January 2020 to now. Even airtime cashback, cash send deposits, or family support can reflect as income.
If possible, ask family/friends to send support money to another account not linked to you.
Update your details with SASSA
On the SASSA SRD website, update your banking details or select “Post Office”/“Cash Send” as your payment option if that works better.
This can help reduce incorrect “income detected” flags.
Keep proof
If you’re truly unemployed since 2019, keep proof like:
— Termination letter from last job
— Affidavit stating you’re unemployed and rely on support
— Bank statement showing no steady income
These can help if you need to approach SASSA offices directly.
Many people in your situation eventually get approved after consistent appeals, so don’t give up.
